How do I know if I need a new system?
If you already own a central air conditioning system and it is inoperable, then a service call is definitely in order. Most units can be repaired at a relatively low cost. The decision to replace the unit should be based partially on the serviceman’s recommendation keeping in mind that a new unit will be more efficient and less costly to operate. Our approach when advising a customer is "what would I do if it were my home and expense?", which is the easiest way to give sound, honest, advice.
What is a ton? Is that what the unit weighs?
The term "ton" can be confusing. It is actually a measure of the capacity of the AC unit. One ton indicates a one horse power compressor in a unit that will deliver 12,000 BTU’s of cooling and deliver 400 cubic feet per minute of air. BTU is the measurement of heat that is provided by a furnace or removed by an air conditioner. The average home requires a 3 ton unit, and if a combination heat/cool package unit is the best approach, the unit will only weigh approximately 400 pounds.
Why can the service rate seem expensive?
Many feel service rates are high, but take into consideration truck insurance, licensing fees, and fuel costs, which are all associated with being a licensed contractor. Legitimate business is a rare thing these days, and we are proud to be able to say that Comfort Zone is based on honesty, skill, and hard work.
Why can't I have an exact estimate over the phone?
Often we are able to provide a rough idea of the cost over the phone based on general information, although in order to suit you with the unique custom system you desire, an onsite viewing will be provided in order to meet the individual needs of every household or business environment.
How do I know when it is time to replace my system?
By following these simple guidelines, you can estimate whether or not fixing vs. repairing is the right decision. On average the lifetime of:
  • an air conditioning unit is 12-15 yrs
  • a furnace is 15-20 yrs
  • a boiler is 15-20 yrs
However, these are guidelines. If a unit has been repaired several times, or has had higher than average wear, then even if it’s before the average lifetime of a typical system, it might make sense to replace it.
How do I know if my system is working properly?
Is it starting to make noises? Is it cooling and/or heating all areas of the house sufficiently? Have your utility bills gone up for no apparent reason? Has it been taking longer to cool down or heat up the space?

Any of these are signs that you may need service to avert any further serious damage to your system as well as keep your home or business comfortable for the people and pets in it.
What is a SEER rating?
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The higher the SEER number, the more efficient the system is and the less it will cost in the long run to own and operate it.
Do I need a maintenance agreement?
